UrbanGlass, the nonprofit art center that publishes the Glass Quarterly Hot Sheet, is holding its 2021 Gala and Auction on May 12th, where it will celebrate glass as a medium for contemporary art. A virtual event, this year's fundraising gala will be unique for its distinctly New York flavor with contemporary art stars such as Kiki Smith, a co-chair, and honorees such as arts philanthropist Barbara Tober and artist Deborah Czersko who will share their personal takes on the material and how it is used by contemporary artists.
A curated assortment of works in glass are now available to preview at the Agnes Varis Art Center's first-floor galleryat UrbanGlass, where works by Lindsey Adelman, Zoe Buckman, Monica Cook, Deborah Czeresko, Andrew Erdos, Jes Fan, Martha Friedman, Katherine Gray, Beth Lipman, Shari Mendelson, Pamela Sabroso and Alison Siegel, Biba Schutz, Katie Stout, Kiki Smith, Matthew Szosz, and Chris Wolston will remain on view until the gala concludes on the evening of May 12th. The event will kick off at 6:30 PM for VIP ticketholders, who will have received a special "House Party Box" that includes the makings of a Mojito cocktail to be sipped from a hand-blown glass, also provided. All ticketholders will be welcomed at 7 PM, when performance artist Grace Whiteside emcees the evening alongside co-chairs Kiki Smith and Margaret Rose Vendryes. Look for guest appearances by Heller Gallery's Katya Heller, chair of the UrbanGlass board, as well as Leslie Jackson Chihuly, Beth Lipman, and board member Cynthia Manocherian.
