Help Wanted: Alfred University seeks full-time visiting glass professor for three-year stint

Alfred University's campus is situated in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in western New York state, about an hour's drive from The Corning Museum of Glass .

Alfred University’s glass program, headed by Steven Dee Edwards and staffed by Fred Tschida and Angus Powers, is looking to add a full-time faculty member to its ranks. Though the position will not begin until August 2011, the December 3rd, 2010, deadline to apply is rapidly approaching. The successful applicant will have access to the university’s extensive glassblowing studio about to undergo a major upgrade and renovation, as well as a recently completed brand-new 3,000-square foot casting area.

The official job posting states that university is seeking “an exceptional artist” who will “will become part of a progressive, successful, and growing nationally ranked glass program and will have the opportunity to develop programs, curricula, and facilities.” The successful applicant will teach three courses, both undergraduate and graduate, per semester, and is expected to maintain an active exhibition schedule of his or her own artwork. Regarding the philosophical bent of the program, the glass department is within the “Sculpture/Dimensional Studies” division of the university’s School of Art and Design. According to the job posting: “The program is grounded in a material tradition while simultaneously promoting creative study challenging the ever-expanding field of sculpture.”

Requirements include an MFA, experience teaching at the college level, ability to work well with others within all spheres of university life, the ability to communicate and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and energy to innovate. Technical skills in the maintenance of a glass studio are a plus.
