"Crafting the Story of the Glassmakers of Herat"Film screening and presentation
Produced by Corning material scientist Robert Brill and Magnum Photos-affiliated cinematographer Elliot Erwitt, the 1979 film "Glassmakers of Herat" layers footage of 20th-century glassmakers in Afghanistan with a reading of ancient cuneiform texts on glassmaking. The film posits the contemporary artisans as the last remaining "vestiges" of ancient Mesopotamian glass knowledge. We will screen the film, followed by a presentation by Anna Riley on the historical conditions under which the film was made and the afterlives of its narrative.
