GENERAL

a. I am an artist that knows nothing about glass working, but am interested in using glass in my work.  Can UrbanGlass help me?

Yes. You can start learning about glass by enrolling in one of our many classes.  There are also several other venues that might be of interest including the Visiting Artist Fellowships, Urban Invites, or Atelier programs. 

b. I have an antique chandelier that is broken.  Can UrbanGlass fix it?

UrbanGlass cannot fix the piece, however we do have a bulletin board that we can list repair jobs so individual artists who use our studios can help you restore your broken piece.  UrbanGlass takes no responsibility for repair work done by artists working out of our studio.  

c. Does the Studio have WiFi?

Yes.

STUDIO

a. What are the Studio hours?

The studio is open from 10 am until 9 pm daily. Special summer hours are announced yearly.

b. What equipment is available in the Hot Shop?

The 4000 square foot Hot Shop is equipped with seven working stations:
• one goblet (9" diameter ring no doors),
• three medium (17" diameter ring with two sets of doors),
• two large (21" diameter ring with two sets of doors),
• and one extra large (27" diameter ring with two sets of doors) glory holes.

All molten glass is from one of our two 1000 lb day tank furnaces.

There are fourteen annealers to accommodate blowing and casting:
• four small annealers (23" x 23" x 20"),
• six large annealers (25" x 45" x 19"),
• one car kiln (60" x 36" x 39"),
• and an extra large annealer (60" x 108" x 30").

Each station has a bench, tool bench, yoke with heat shield, pipe-quenching bucket, crack off bucket with pipe stand, and block water buckets.
The studio has two pipe warmers and two garages (with three pastorellis).

UrbanGlass makes available a powder box, gold leaf table, and a gas saver for small hand torches. Kevlar gloves, wooden paddles, blocks, and a variety of shop pipes, punties, and hand tools (seven sets of jacks, tweezers, diamond shears, and shears) are also available. There are opportunities at each bench to hook up compressed air hoses, which are available through the tech shop.

c. Is propane available to use in the Hot Shop?

Propane is not available, but may be brought into the studio in 1 lb tanks only.

d. What equipment is available in the Cold Shop?

The 1200 square foot Cold Shop is equipped with
• two diamond saws (10" blade diameter with 3/4 " arbor and 14" blade diameter with 1" arbor) with studio blades on each saw, but you are recommended to supply your own blades.
• Two grinding lathes (Merker and Denver both with 1" arbors) however, you will need to provide your own cutting wheels.
• Three 36" flat grinding wheels (80, 220, and 400 grit). Grit is available through The Store at UrbanGlass.
• Two belt sanders with studio belts available, however UrbanGlass recommends that you bring your own belts.
• Two pumice wheels and
• Two cerium wheels with pumice and cerium available through The Store.
• And one drill press, for which you will need to provide your own water feed and diamond bits.

e. What equipment is available in the Flame working Studio?

There are ten working stations. Each station can support either a Carlisle Mini CC Burner or a Carlisle CC Bench Burner. All the torches are natural gas / oxygen mix. There is also a Wilt Kiln and two small bead kilns for annealing.

f. What equipment is available in the Neon Studio?

There are ten working stations with ribbon burners and cross fire burners. There is also a pumping and bombarding station, which is only accessible through faculty and staff.

g. What equipment is available in the Flat Shop?

The shop has plenty of flat table top work space. There are also 2 large top fire Denver kilns and one small top fire Denver kiln.

h. What equipment is available in the Mold Shop?

There are several wax melting stations with individual ventilation systems, three small wallpaper steamers stations, and one large melt out steamer. There is also plenty of table top space for mold making.

i. What should I wear in the Studio?

• Eye protection is required. Shade 2.0 or 2.5 is recommended for the hot shop.
• Appropriate clothing should be worn in all shops - no flammable fabrics such as polyester or rayon in the hot shop.
• Shoes must have closed toes and backs.
• Hearing protection is recommended for certain areas of the studio, e.g. the cold shop.
• If you have long hair, you must tie it back when working in any area of the studio.

j. When I rent space, do I need to bring my tools, color, etc. with me?

The studio has studio Kevlar gloves, wooden paddles, blocks, which are free for your use. There are also a variety of shop rentals including pipes, punties, and hand tools (seven sets of jacks, tweezers, diamond shears, and shears). You will need to provide specifics such as color. Color and tools can be purchased through a variety of vendors, please see our links page for more information.

k. What happens if I burn myself?
Immediately find a technician or staff member for assistance. All staff has first aid and CPR training and will help you with your injury.

l. Can I bring food into the Studio?

Yes. There is a studio refrigerator and microwave for your convenience. The refrigerator is cleaned weekly, so all items must be labeled before placing them in the refrigerator.

m. Can I bring a guest with me into the Studio?

Yes. Your guest must fill out a liability form located at the front reception desk.

n. Can I take pictures/video in the studio?

Yes, with prior approval from the Development Office.
